Are you running your life using the same strategies that unbelievers are using?
Is your life based on what is popular? Or is it built on the right foundation?
Whether we realize it or not, every one of us is building our lives on something. Some people build on money, believing financial security will bring them peace. Others build on relationships, careers, achievements, or the approval of people. While these things are not necessarily wrong, they make poor foundations because they are temporary.
A life that is not built on a solid foundation will not weather the storms of life. That is why the foundation of every Christian should be Jesus Christ.
Chasing the same things the people of the world pursue and building your life on things that are passing away will eventually lead to fear, frustration, and disappointment. The things of this world can never give us the security that only Christ can provide.
A life built on the wrong foundation is always shaky. It is unstable because your future is based on assumptions rather than God’s unchanging truth.
That is exactly why Jesus ended the Sermon on the Mount with a powerful illustration. He said:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24)
Notice that both builders experienced the storm. The difference was not the storm; it was the foundation. The house built on the rock stood firm, while the one built on sand collapsed.
The same is true for us. Storms will come, but a life built on Christ will stand.
So why should every Christian build their life on Jesus? Why is He the only true foundation?
Jesus Is the Word Who Became Flesh
In Matthew 7:24, Jesus says that the person who hears His words and puts them into practice is a wise builder.
This tells us that building our lives on Jesus begins by building our lives on the Word of God.
John tells us that Jesus is “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14). He is not merely someone who teaches the truth; He is the Truth (John 14:6). Every promise, every command, and every instruction found in Scripture reveals His heart and character.
When we allow God’s Word to shape our decisions, attitudes, priorities, and relationships, we are building our lives on a foundation that cannot be shaken. Instead of allowing our emotions, culture, or public opinion to guide us, we allow God’s truth to direct our steps.
The more we know God’s Word, the stronger our foundation becomes.
Jesus Never Changes
One reason the things of this world make poor foundations is that they constantly change.
People change. Circumstances change. Economies change.
Our feelings even change from one day to the next.
A friend may disappoint you. A loved one may betray you. A business may fail. A career may end.
But Jesus never changes.
Hebrews 13:8 tells us:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
His love is constant. His promises remain true. And His character never changes.
When you build your life on Jesus, you are building on Someone who will never abandon you, reject you, or change His mind about you. Even when everything around you seems uncertain, Christ remains faithful.
All Things Were Created Through Him
The Bible tells us that everything was created through Jesus and for Jesus (Colossians 1:16).
That means nothing is too difficult for Him.
No problem confuses Him, and no situation catches Him off guard. He understands every detail of your life because He is the Creator of it all.
When you don’t know which direction to take… Or you are facing impossible circumstances… When the future seems uncertain…
Jesus already knows the way.
He sees the whole picture while we only see a small part. His wisdom is perfect, and His guidance is always trustworthy.
Because He created you, He knows exactly how to lead you.
Jesus Holds Everything Together
Life can sometimes feel like it is falling apart.
Unexpected trials, painful losses, financial struggles, broken relationships, and unanswered prayers can make us wonder whether everything is out of control.
But Colossians 1:17 reminds us:
“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Even when your life feels chaotic, Jesus is still holding everything together.
Nothing surprises Him. No situation is beyond His control. And nothing is impossible for Him.
The future may seem uncertain from our human perspective, but we can rest knowing that our lives are in the hands of the One who sustains the entire universe.
That is a foundation you can trust.
Jesus Loves Us Unconditionally
One of the greatest needs of every human heart is love.
Many people spend their lives trying to earn acceptance through success, achievements, or the approval of others. Yet none of these things can satisfy the deepest longing of the soul.
Jesus offers us something completely different.
He left the glory of heaven, took on human flesh, and willingly died on the cross for our sins because He loves us. His love is not based on our performance.
It is not earned by good works. Jesus’ love for us is not withdrawn when we fail.
Romans 8:38–39 reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When we build our lives on Jesus, we are building on the secure foundation of God’s unconditional love. Our identity is no longer rooted in what we achieve but in what Christ has already accomplished through His death and resurrection.
That kind of foundation brings peace, security, and hope.
How Do We Build Our Lives on Jesus?
Building on Christ is more than believing He exists. It means allowing Him to shape every area of our lives.
We build on Jesus when we:
- Read and obey God’s Word daily (James 1:22).
- Pray and seek His wisdom before making decisions (Proverbs 3:5–6).
- Trust His promises instead of our feelings.
- Surround ourselves with believers who encourage our faith.
- Keep our eyes on eternal treasures instead of temporary success.
- Continue trusting Him even when life doesn’t make sense.
A strong foundation is not built overnight. It is built one day of faithful obedience at a time.
Every one of us is building something.
The question is not if you are building, but what you are building on.
If your foundation is money, success, relationships, popularity, or your own strength, those things will eventually disappoint you because they cannot withstand every storm.
But if your foundation is Jesus Christ, you can stand firm no matter what comes your way.
Today, take a moment to examine your heart.
- What are you trusting most?
- What is shaping your decisions?
- What is giving you security?
If the answer is anything other than Jesus, invite Him to become the foundation of your life. Spend time in His Word, trust His promises, and build your life on His finished work on the cross.
A life built on Jesus is not a life without storms.
It is a life that remains standing because its foundation can never be shaken.
