Some of us are stepping into a new season or preparing to take a major step in life, and even the thought of it fills us with fear.
Whether it is starting a new job, launching a ministry, moving to a new place, or simply walking into the unknown, fear has a way of making us question ourselves and even question God.
While we cannot always prevent feelings of fear from arising, we can choose not to entertain or allow them to take root in our hearts.
We have the authority to reject fear.
I don’t know what is making you fearful today, but I want to encourage you with the words that appear repeatedly throughout Scripture: fear not. God continually tells His people not to fear because He knows both our weaknesses and His own faithfulness.
When we choose fear over faith, we are, in a sense, placing more confidence in our circumstances than in God’s power. God calls us to trust Him, even when we cannot see how everything will work out.
Here are several reasons why we can choose to fear not.
God Is With Us
One of the greatest truths we can hold on to is that God, the Creator of heaven and earth, is with us. He has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
Knowing that God is with us gives us confidence to face each day. He does not simply watch us from a distance; He strengthens, helps, and upholds us with His righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10).
Even when feelings of fear arise, we can cling to Him because He is our strength.
Psalm 23:4 reminds us:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Notice that David does not say we might walk through dark valleys; he says when we do. Difficult seasons are part of life, but God’s presence is what gives us courage.
If you are battling fear today, remind yourself that God is with you. Spend time in His Word and allow His promises to comfort your heart.
God Is Our Stronghold
The enemy delights in filling our minds with lies that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God. Those lies become strongholds when we continually believe them.
But Scripture reminds us that the Lord Himself is our stronghold.
No matter what fearful thoughts the enemy plants in our minds, we must remember that only what God says about Himself and about us is true. His Word is the standard, not our emotions or circumstances.
Do not allow the enemy’s lies to pull you away from God’s truth. Instead, hold firmly to His promises and choose to fear not, knowing that God is your refuge.
God Is Our Ever-Present Help in Trouble
As long as we live in this fallen world, we will experience trouble. Jesus Himself told us that we would have trials, but He also reminded us to take heart because He has overcome the world.
Psalm 46 declares that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
There will be seasons when it feels as though the mountains are falling into the sea, the earth is giving way, and the waters are roaring around us. In other words, life may feel unstable and overwhelming.
Yet even in those moments, God remains present.
Instead of giving in to fear or running away, let us make Him our refuge and strength. When we remember who God is, we can confidently fear not, even in life’s storms.
God Is Our Helper
Every one of us needs help from time to time, and the wonderful news is that God gladly offers it.
When facing difficult circumstances, do not be afraid. People may oppose you or disappoint you, but they are only human. The Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, is your Helper.
Because He is with you, you never face your battles alone.
The Lord Himself Fights for Us
Sometimes life leaves us exhausted, discouraged, and ready to give up. Those moments often become opportunities for fear to creep into our hearts.
Yet God reminds His people:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)
Think about that.
The God of the universe takes responsibility for battles that are too great for us to fight.
Far too often, we spend our energy fighting battles that God never asked us to carry. Instead of striving in our own strength, He calls us to trust Him.
Our responsibility is to believe Him, remain faithful, and allow Him to work on our behalf.
God Is a Covenant-Keeping God
People may break their promises, but God never breaks His.
When He tells us not to be afraid, He means it because His promises are certain. If He says He will protect us, strengthen us, help us, and fight for us, then that is exactly what He will do.
God watches over His Word to fulfill it. His faithfulness never changes, and His promises remain true in every season.
That is why we can choose to fear not even when everything around us seems uncertain.
Do Not Let Fear Rule Your Life
As long as we live in this fallen world, we will encounter situations that tempt us to fear.
Every day we have a choice.
We can allow fear to guide our decisions, or we can surrender our lives to God’s faithful hands.
God calls us to walk by faith.
If we are not walking by faith, we will naturally begin walking by fear.
Fear is one of the enemy’s greatest tools. He uses it to weaken our faith, distract us from God’s promises, and keep us from obeying God’s calling.
That is why we must refuse to believe the lies he whispers to our hearts.
Fear brings torment, but God desires His children to live in peace.
It is also important to understand the difference between healthy fear and a life controlled by fear. Sometimes feelings of fear serve as a warning that alerts us to genuine danger. Those moments help protect us and prompt us to exercise wisdom.
However, when fear becomes constant, controlling, and tormenting, it opens the door to anxiety, stress, and panic. That is not God’s desire for His children.
Scripture tells us that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
Instead of allowing fear to dominate your life, choose to fill your mind with God’s truth until His peace becomes stronger than your fears.
Fear may knock on the door of your heart, but it does not have to be invited in.
Every day, you have an opportunity to decide whose voice you will believe. Will you believe the voice of fear that magnifies your problems, or will you believe the voice of your faithful Father who has promised never to leave you?
Whatever season you are facing today, remember that the God who calls you is also the God who walks beside you, strengthens you, fights for you, and keeps every promise He has made.
You do not have to know what tomorrow holds because you know the One who holds tomorrow. So take the next step in faith, keep your eyes fixed on Christ, and fear not, for the Lord is with you.
