There are so many things happening around us that can easily distract us and pull our hearts away from Jesus. That is why learning to abide in Christ is more important than ever.
Jesus tells us:
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” (John 15:4)
Notice that this is a two-way relationship. Jesus calls us to abide in Him, and as we do, He abides in us.
Christianity has never been about religion or simply attending church; it has always been about a relationship with Jesus.
I believe the degree to which we abide in Christ is the degree to which we experience His life flowing through us. The level of intimacy one person has with Jesus will not necessarily be the same as another person’s.
Sometimes we wonder why some believers seem to have such a strong relationship with God. They hear His voice, they are led by Him, and they seem to walk with such confidence.
The answer is not that God loves them more.
God is not a respecter of persons, nor does He show favoritism. The difference is that they have intentionally invested time in building their relationship with Him. They have learned to remain in His presence and know Him intimately.
If your relationship with God is not where you want it to be, don’t spend your time comparing yourself to others. Instead, begin building your own relationship with Him. Intimacy with God is available to everyone who seeks Him.
Abide in Christ Through God’s Word
One of the greatest ways we abide in Christ is through His Word.
In Joshua 1, God instructed Joshua to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night. Today, that instruction applies to us through the Bible. God promised Joshua that by continually meditating on His Word, he would prosper and succeed in all his ways.
The same principle applies to us.
We grow spiritually and walk successfully by studying God’s Word, meditating on it day and night, and allowing it to shape our thinking.
Biblical meditation is not about emptying your mind. It is about filling your mind with God’s Word, thinking deeply about it, and quietly speaking it over your life.
I love meditating on Scripture because it renews my mind and gives me deeper revelation of who God is. As I spend time reflecting on His Word, I begin to understand His heart more clearly.
Anyone can read the Bible or quote verses, but those who consistently study and meditate on God’s Word are the ones who continue growing spiritually and bearing fruit.
We cannot expect to succeed God’s way if we simply skim through Scripture. We must hunger for His Word until it becomes part of who we are.
Think of God’s Word as a seed. You plant it in the soil of your heart. Then you water it by continually reading and meditating on it. You remove the weeds, i.e., wrong beliefs, sinful thoughts, fear, lies, and worldly opinions that try to choke its growth. Eventually, when the right season comes, you harvest the fruit.
Sometimes growth takes time, just as a farmer patiently waits for the harvest. But every seed planted in good soil eventually bears fruit.
Pray Over the Word
It is possible to read the Bible using only human understanding, but Scripture is a spiritual book.
The Word of God is not a collection of facts.
John tells us:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
The Word is Jesus Himself.
As we study the Bible, we are getting to know Jesus.
Before you read, ask the Holy Spirit to open your understanding so that you can receive what God wants to teach you.
One beautiful thing I have learned is that the same Bible verse can speak differently to you in different seasons of life. A passage you read today may minister to you in a completely new way two years from now because God meets us exactly where we are.
That is why praying Scripture is so powerful. When you pray God’s promises over your life, you are agreeing with His will.
If you are believing God for something, find His promises concerning that situation and begin praying those verses over your situation. The Word of God is called the sword of the Spirit. Use it to fight discouragement, fear, temptation, and every lie of the enemy.
This is another practical way to abide in Christ and allow His Word to shape your heart and mind.
Jesus Is the Vine
Jesus continues the illustration by saying:
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
This picture is so beautiful.
A branch cannot survive by itself. It has no life apart from the vine. It receives everything it needs from its source.
The same is true for us.
Jesus is our source. To abide in Christ is to remain connected to Him just as a branch remains connected to the vine.
Apart from Him, we cannot bear lasting fruit.
Many of us begin our journey with Jesus well. We pray, seek His direction, and depend on Him. But as time goes on, we sometimes become comfortable and slowly begin relying on our own wisdom instead of His.
Jesus reminds us to continue abiding in Him.
The way we begin with Him should be the way we continue with Him.
Perhaps the reason some of us are struggling today is that we have drifted from the Vine. We have adopted the world’s methods instead of remaining connected to Jesus.
This is a loving invitation to return.
Stop trying to build your life outside of Christ. Things may appear successful for a season, but anything disconnected from Jesus will eventually leave us empty and exhausted.
Beware of Counterfeit Blessings
The enemy delights in drawing believers away from God’s will.
Sometimes he offers counterfeit blessings. These are things that appear good but slowly pull us away from intimacy with Christ.
Before long, we find ourselves trapped in cycles of frustration, confusion, and spiritual dryness.
But there is hope.
If you have wandered away, remember that nothing is too difficult for God.
Repent.
Turn back to Him.
He is ready to restore you.
I know this personally because I, too, have chased counterfeit things at times. It is not always easy to let go and return to God’s path, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, it is absolutely possible.
We do not have to live in cycles of defeat anymore.
Continue Abiding
Life will not always be easy. Jesus never promised a life free from trouble.
But He did promise that He has overcome the world.
Because He lives in us and we live in Him, we can face every challenge with confidence.
We are more than conquerors through Christ.
As long as you have breath in your lungs, you can choose to turn back to Jesus and begin abiding in Him again.
Do not be distracted by what the world is doing.
Listen carefully to what God is saying, even when it doesn’t make sense. Especially these days, God is leading His people in ways that often seem foolish to the natural mind.
But our Heavenly Father knows exactly what He is doing.
He will never lead us astray.
Remember Jesus’ promise in John 15:5: those who abide in Him will bear much fruit.
You may not see the fruit immediately, but God is working beneath the surface. In His perfect timing, your life will bear fruit that remains and brings glory to Him.
Let us always remember that without Jesus, we can do nothing.
People may appear successful while living outside of God’s will, but anything built apart from Christ will not last. One day, every piece of work will be tested.
May our lives be built with gold and silver rather than materials that burn away in the fire.
Let us remain connected to the true Vine. Every day, let us choose to abide in Christ, for it is only through Him that we bear fruit that lasts.
